Our nurses will educate you and your caretakers on the processes that are part of your personal recovery.

Outpatient Surgery
It is required that you have a responsible adult over the age of 19 to assist and stay overnight with you after surgery since you will not be able to drive for 24 hours. You are also not going to be able to cook for yourself and you may need assistance moving about. It is a good idea for someone to check on you every few hours at night and be there to assist you with taking your medication. If you were to have a complication, that person would help in obtaining the needed medical assistance.

Inpatient Surgery
Some surgeries will require you to stay at the hospital overnight. For these patients, we want your stay in our guest suites to be a home away from home. We will do our best to make sure your stay at Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital is a pleasant one.

Patients on Blood Thinners After Surgery
If you are on blood thinners after surgery, our nurses will give you information on the foods and medications that can interfere with the effectiveness of the blood thinning medication.

Physical & Occupational Therapy, if applicable.
In many cases, physical and/or occupational therapy will be needed in your recovery process. The Orthopaedic and Sports Rehabilitation department at Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital is a great resource to help you through your rehabilitation. Ask your doctor if rehab is needed and ask to have it at Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital.

Retail Pharmacy
During the pre-op phase, indicate to your nurse if you would like your medications filled at the Retail Pharmacy. This information will be documented in your chart to expedite the prescription filling process. The pharmacy will take care of the rest. A member of your family or a friend may pick up your prescription on your behalf while you recover from your surgery. Or your medication can be delivered to your bedside before you are discharged home.
